The school year is quickly coming to a close. A huge shout out to our teachers and students that help make both the 7th and 8th-grade school trips an ultimate success. A 28-year retired high school principal stopped me in the parking lot on the morning of our departure from the hotel in Williamsburg praising our students for their respect, maturity, and behavior in the hotel. We couldn't be more proud of their timeliness, responsibility, and kindness to each other. Great job!

This week we have exciting activities planned. Mr. Skotzke is doing a rocket launch on Wednesday for his sixth-grade science students. On May 30th at 7:00, we will hold our 8th Grade Promotion with a PTO reception to follow. All students are expected to be at school for the remainder of the week. On Friday, June 2nd, PTO will be sponsoring a Kona Ice truck.

Family MAP reports will be shared with your child to bring home in the coming days. If you do not receive one, please contact Becky Edwards and it will be shared with parents directly.

Please remind your children the importance of making good decisions and following the rules for the last few days of school. We appreciate all of your continued support.

A survey will go out to 6th graders so they can express interest in sports they would like to play next year. Sign-ups through Final Forms will begin on May 15th.

Power of the Pen UPDATE!

I have some awesome news to share! Janna's first story for round one was selected as THE BEST OF ROUND! After everyone leaves the state tournament, the judges that presented at state Power of the Pen read all the first place stories for round one. They found her story, "Hope Will See Me Through" to be THE BEST!!!! I am so happy for and proud of her! She is an AMAZING writer!! Here is part of the email I received last night:

Congratulations to the following state Best of Round and Director’s Choice winners. These pieces are eligible for publication in the Book of Winners. A certificate and publication instructions will be emailed directly to the winners’ parents if we have their email address, to the coach if we do not.

This is such an accomplishment to have her story be considered the best of all the entries in the first round of 250! Janna if you recall also placed 7th overall in the state competition! Such a great way to end the year!

The Greedy Tree

Trees can be beautiful with flowers and leaves,

They give us aromas oh so sweet and O2 to breathe.

Some sing cheerfully in the breeze while they offer us shade to read,

But some are sneaky and naughty with greed.

Have you thought much about different types of trees?

Not varieties, but personalities, I have one of these.

It stands in the corner of my driveway with a grin,

Its branches and twigs pointed upward ready to sin.

You see, my beautiful tree,

enjoys stealing from me.

When you least expect it and are having your fun,

It will take all your toys, leaving you with none.

The first treasure it took was my green frog kite,

It slipped up and away and out of sight.

It was 10 feet long from head to tail,

And pulled in the wind like a boat’s sail.

That kite wound and wound around,

until my kite could not be found.

Then the wind decided, not today,

Twisting my kite in the branches where it would stay.

With one thing stuck in my naughty tree,

Just wait around and there will be three.

I was playing with my hula hoop with flair,

I was passing it back and forth and threw it up into the air.

I waited and waited but it never came down,

I looked up and saw my tree was wearing it as a crown.

I loved that hula hoop with all my heart,

So I got a ball and tried to use it as a dart.

Going once, going twice, sold to the tree,

My efforts went to waste, that hula hoop would not come free.

And now it had my ball as well,

That growing, greedy tree sure did swell.

And none of them have came out to this day,

Through windstorms and snow storms they sure did stay.

These days if i want to see my old toys,

I just head to their grave and remember all the joys.

P.S. This is based on a true story about a tree in my driveway.

I just wanted to give as much of an update as I can about middle school and high school sports for next year.

Current 8th graders that are going to the high school next year will have the opportunity to sign up for many different sports. In the coming months, 8th grade Final Forms profiles will be migrated into high school accounts. Please make sure all information, especially physicals, are updated. This web page has a listing of all sports that are offered at the high school level: West Geauga High School (Chesterland, OH) Athletics (westgathletics.org). I have asked the high school coaches to let me know about spring and summer opportunities that 8th graders can participate in. Any information that I get will be put on announcements. Starting May 15th, athletes can go into Final Forms and select any sports that they may be interested in playing. I would suggest clicking on any sport that there is interest in so no information is missed. Coaches use Final Forms to send out emails.

Current 7th graders can sign up for middle school sports that they are interested in starting on May 15. See sports and information below.

Parents of current 6th graders should register for a Final Forms account at https://westg-oh.finalforms.com/. This is where all athletic information is warehoused. Starting May 15th, they can sign up for the following sports. A valid sports physical is required to tryout and play any sport. OHSAA will be releasing their 2023-24 form very soon.

Fall: cheerleading (tryouts will be held in May), cross country, football, girls volleyball (tryouts will be held most likely July 31 and August 1)

Winter - basketball (tryouts will be held in October for boys and December for girls), cheerleading (tryouts to be announced), wrestling

Spring - club baseball (tryouts to be announced), club lacrosse (if there is a coach and enough interest), club softball (tryouts to be announced), track

Also, please feel free to access the homework log as teachers post all homework assignments daily to this page.

Cell Phone/Social Media: Please continue to consistently monitor your child's use of technology. Children thrive with boundaries and need to know that parents are consistently keeping a close watch on them. Children need to know that parent can and are expected to check their text messages, internet history, and social media accounts. Continue to reinforce that what they post to social media or say in text messages could lead to very serious consequences.

MS Book Club
