The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for an internship with Chesapeake & Coastal Service. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in the science communications field.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is creating and delivering coastal risk communications for the state of Maryland.
Duties include:
- Implement MyCoast communication and marketing strategies, including collaborating with communities on the restoration tracker tool, developing app messages and social media content, and pre/post storm communication.
- Assist in developing the messaging and graphics for flood risk signage which will be located in various areas throughout the state.
- Support outreach efforts for Grants Gateway projects and development of an outreach plan for the 2025 solicitation.
- Assist with creating and delivering internal communications for the Unit such as content summaries, program deliverables, websites, and social media.
- Support unit activities and fieldwork
The internship runs 12 weeks between October and December. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.
Student should be in one of the following degree programs, or in a field closely related: Biology,Environmental Science,Communications,Marketing orWildlife Conservation
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The following are preferred, not required qualifications:
- Familiarity with Microsoft products such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Familiarity with Google services such as Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar
- Experience with qualitative data analysisInterest/experience in community engagement
- Familiarity with different social media platforms and communication strategies
- Experience and/or skills in communications, education, environmental studies, ecology, marketing, or similar.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
The selected candidate may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. If assigned such duties, you will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on your current driving record.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
